Working remotely and need to feel slightly more “dressed” than your pajamas? Problem solved. And on travel days? Sweat sets are an MVP for curling up on chilly flights. Bonus: you can break up a set and wear each piece separately, unlocking endless mix-and-match potential for those moments when you actually want to plan an outfit.
If you’re ready to retire those ratty, holey sweats that have seen you through college and countless days under your duvet (no judgment — we’ve all got that pair), consider yourself covered. Ahead, discover 20 top-quality, stylish sweatsuit sets from retailers we love and trust. Whether you’re looking for lightweight short sets and breathable cotton co-ords for warm weather or weighty and more structured layers for winter hibernation mode you’ll find your new go-to right here.

FASHIONAs professional online shoppers, Refinery29 affiliate writers have a spidey sense for uncovering the best virtual sale sections and limited-time offers. Whether it’s Lululemon’s ol’ reliable We Made Too Much sale or a flash deal on best-selling skin-care brands, where there’s a clearance rack, there’s an R29 shopping editor ready to size up its price-slashed goods. Today, we bring you the best sales happening this weekend — gird your loins, err, wallets.
The deals on this list must meet at least one of the following criteria: The discount is applied to a Refinery29 reader-favorite item (according to our anonymous shopping data), it takes a minimum of 20% off the full price, or it’s an item that’s rarely discounted, making even a slight price cut worth noting. The following sales are ones to watch and worthy of a spot in all budget-friendly carts — at least, in our opinion.

FASHIONAs someone with thick, dry, and coarse 3C curls, I can confidently say that the right products (and even advice) are hard to come by — and it’s because most of them just aren’t made with our unique hair types and textures in mind. And as a beauty editor who has tried almost everything at this point, from the most expensive salon brands to the affordable drugstore ones, I’ve learned that the $$$ ones don’t always mean they’re the most effective.
That’s why it was a breath of fresh air to attend a Mielle Organics panel with the brand’s founder Monique Rodriguez (whose curls are the stuff of legends, by the way) at Beautycon in Los Angeles on November 2. For the uninitiated, Mielle is at the forefront of natural hair care, creating products for textured strands that are affordable *and* incredibly effective.
During the panel, Rodriguez shared her entrepreneurial wisdom with the masses (she’s a big advocate for setting boundaries and making the word “no” a complete sentence), along with key tips and holy grail products that saved her curls when starting her natural hair journey. Keep reading for all of Rodriguez’s wisdom. Now, long-term hydration and defined, healthy curls no longer feels like a pipe dream.
“[The transition to natural hair] does not happen overnight,” said Rodriguez, who was a teenager when she first relaxed her hair and continued into her late 20s (something most Black women experience, myself included). “That’s what a lot of people get confused about. They think that using a product one time will give you instant results and that the product is just magic. You have to know that, with your transition, it could take [anywhere from] six months to a year.”
Rodriguez recommends a cut — whether that’s big or small — to help encourage the growth of healthy new strands. Rodriguez opted for a smaller, gradual chop herself and let her curls slowly grow out naturally again.
“I needed a good balance of both protein and moisture in my hair,” Rodriguez explained. “That was one of the first products that we launched when I first started Mielle: the Babassu Oil & Mint Deep Conditioner [which has both]. That was the product that actually helped restore my curls as I was going through that transition. I recommend that product if you’re going through a transition because it will really strengthen your hair and help your curls form.”
The Babassu Oil & Mint Conditioner contains high concentrations of vitamins, amino acids, oils, and fatty acids, which hydrate and deeply replenish the hair. It’s great for starting you natural hair journey, but it also works wonders for heat damaged hair or dry, coarser hair types to restore moisture.
Rodriguez’s hairstylist was initially hesitant to color her hair (a gorgeous blonde shade, might I add) because it can alter your curl pattern. But Rodriguez wasn’t worried — she knew her hair was strong enough to handle it. “Deep conditioning is extremely important,” she said of her hair routine. “Now that I have the color, I make sure I’m using the Babassu Oil and Mint Deep Conditioner and alternating that with the Rosemary Mint Strengthening Hair Masque. [I also] trim my ends every six to eight weeks, which I don’t like, but I know it’s an important part of keeping your hair healthy, especially when you have some type of chemical component added to your hair.”
When it comes to keeping your curls fresh, hydrated, and defined between wash days, Rodriguez has it down to a science. “I think this is something a lot of curly girls struggle with,” she said. “The secret is, you have to apply your products when your hair is soaking wet. When you do this, it’s sealing the moisture into your hair. My wash-and-go routine consists of the Pomegranate & Honey Detangling Conditioner and then I use the Pomegranate & Honey Mousse and the Pomegranate & Honey Custard. You apply these while [your hair is] wet and then you can diffuse your hair which locks in the moisture. I truly don’t have to do anything else to my hair until I rewash it.”
Rodriguez swears by the brand’s cult-loved Rosemary Mint Oil, which she uses every other day, to keep her curls strong, despite being color-treated.
Another non-negotiable product? The Rosemary Mint Clarifying Sugar Scrub that she’ll use once a week to gently remove product buildup and excess oil. Both contain nutrient-rich and strengthening ingredients like rosemary and biotin, and together, they work to prevent breakage and smooth split ends.
Rodriguez says it’s always a good idea to sleep with a bonnet or to do the “pineapple method” with your curls at night. She also stresses that if you’re using great products (like Mielle!), you actually won’t have to do much to your hair between washes. We love to hear it.

While some of us count down to the moment we can bust out our trench coats and puffers, others prefer to deny jacket weather for as long as possible, opting for cozy layers and plush accessories instead. For some, it’s hard to get excited for winter outerwear: it can be bulky, restrictive, and repetitive as the season drags on. Plus, unlike a chunky sweater or trusty pair of pants, investing in a coat or jacket means committing to something you’ll wear most days of the week.
It’s been several seasons since shackets (the hybrid of a shirt and a jacket) became the answer to our noncommittal outerwear woes, and the love is going strong. Now, as the dropping temperatures are impossible to ignore, designers and It Girls are pointing us toward another trend that brings major style points and versatility: the slouchy jacket.
The loose term applies to a range of styles, including baggy leather zip-ups that allow for ample layering to vintage-inspired designs with elongated sleeves and bold shoulders, and pillowy bombers that are worn deliberately oversized. It is all about nonchalance — like that of your most-loved sweatshirt or chunky knit — yet, the look is wearable over, say, a tailored suit or a holiday party outfit.
So far, we’ve seen Hailey Bieber transforming a ‘90s dad leather jacket into a covetable mini dress, Selena Gomez get cozy in a slouchy (and practical) plaid coat, and Ambika Mod model a laid-back barn jacket for Loewe’s SS25 campaign. On the runways, outerwear favorites like Khaite, Acne Studios, and Saint Laurent embraced the slouchy leather jacket with everything from off-duty hoodies to glamorous gowns. Meanwhile, Chloé debuted luxe, puff-shouldered layers, Paloma Wool showcased loose blue bombers, and Area made the case for especially roomy moto jackets cinched with matching belts.
“The slouchy jacket trend is a dream for anyone who loves androgynous style. It’s effortlessly cool and versatile, and is a great way to add a stylish piece to your wardrobe without compromising on comfort,” personal stylist Melissa Bell tells Refinery29. “It pairs perfectly with feminine and masculine pieces, and also lends itself well to layering, which is crucial in the colder months.” Bell looks to designers like The Row and Totême for the tailored, minimalist look, as well as Cos’s boxy jackets and The Frankie Shop’s oversized blazers.
As for styling, two distinct cool-girl formulas are dominating our Pinterest boards and social media feeds. One is to offset the slouchy jacket’s size and structure by pairing it with more form-fitting silhouettes and feminine cuts, like a ruched mini dress or clingy knit and pencil skirt, and the other leans into the relaxed look with equally baggy pants and tops for an effortless embrace of volume. “I would use my slouchy jacket as the anchor piece and layer it over chunkier knits or textured turtlenecks,” Bell says. “Pairing it with wide-leg trousers or tailored wool pants would create a balanced, high-fashion silhouette.”
Content creator Karen Blanchard (better known as @karenbritchick) owns two vintage slouchy jackets: one thigh-grazing, brown leather jacket with a drawstring waist that she discovered in Brooklyn and another bold-shouldered number she scored in Paris. “During the day, I love to style my jacket with a sleek, long-column skirt for an edgy but chic look. [For] the perfect nighttime look, I’ll style the jacket with a mini skirt, tights, and heels,” Blanchard tells Refinery29.
The ‘80s vibes and cool factor are ultimately why the slouchy jacket is the New York creator’s default trend this season. The trick is to not just pick any oversized silhouette: the ideal fit won’t swallow you up and will still retain a bit of structure. “Try on the jackets — especially when you’re vintage shopping — because older cuts are so different to how they are now and you have to see how it looks on you,” Blanchard says. “If you’re shopping online, I recommend measuring one of your favorite jackets you already own from shoulder to shoulder and comparing it to the measurements online.”
Bell co-signs Blanchard’s preference for a slouchy jacket with bold details. “Make sure the tailoring around the shoulders is intentional. A well-defined shoulder seam can keep the piece from feeling overwhelming and add a polished touch to your look.”
“My biggest tip, though, is to always check the men’s section,” Blanchard adds.

FASHIONOn its surface, the Dune universe is run by men. The Dune movies are about the chosen one, Paul Atreides, and his ascension to power among men. And, yes, the Imperium is ruled by an emperor who oversees the Great Houses (also led by men). But with Max’s new TV series Dune: Prophecy, it’s clear that the Bene Gesserit, a powerful ancient sect of women with near-superhuman abilities, are the ones really running things — and they have been quietly dictating the course of history for thousands of years.
Set 10,000 years before Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides and Zendaya’s Chani are traveling via giant sandworms in the desert, Dune: Prophecy shows the Sisterhood (later known as the Bene Gesserit) in its messy journey to power and as it establishes an organization that puppeteers from the shadows by counseling the leaders of the Great Houses and manipulating bloodlines in order to cultivate rulers they can control. Loosely set after the events in Sisterhood of Dune, a prequel novel by Brian Herbert (the son of the original Dune author Frank Herbert) and Kevin J. Anderson, Dune: Prophecy’s story is almost wholly new, giving the show room to expand on arguably the most compelling group of women in sci-fi and subvert gender power dynamics even more. “I think the Sisterhood — the Bene Gesserit — play probably the most essential part of the whole [Dune] universe,” executive producer Jordan Goldberg tells Refinery29. “Yes, it’s all about Paul Atreides later on, but really, Paul Atreides is perhaps part of their doing.”
At the heart of Dune: Prophecy are Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) and Reverend Mother Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams), two sisters working to cement the Sisterhood’s future in the face of existential threats, particularly in the form of a foreboding prophecy and a powerful, mysterious soldier named Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel). Fans will no doubt recognize the sisters’ last name, but these women are a far cry from the bald psychopaths that are Austin Butler’s Feyd-Rautha and Stellan Skarsgård’s Baron Harkonnen in Denis Villeneuve’s films. Instead, we meet House Harkonnen in a fragile moment rooted in family tragedy and disgrace. But don’t be fooled: These sisters still have that notorious Harkonnen intensity and rage.
For the Harkonnen sisters, Watson and Williams took inspiration from some of the most infamously ruthless ruling women in history. “We went to look at portraits of Queen Elizabeth, Mary Queen of Scots, Bloody Mary, all those Tudor women, because that’s a universe that has a similar sense of these very powerful, enigmatic women [who were] like puppet masters controlling everything,” Watson tells Refinery29.
As matriarchs, Valya and Tula run a school of young female acolytes who are taught the power of “truthsense,” the precise ability to tell when someone is lying. On the secluded planet of Wallach IX, the Sisterhood is under no one’s supervision but their own. The school, along with pretty much everything else about them, allows the Sisterhood to deeply lean into the idea of feminine mystique as a way to cement intrigue and importance in the Imperium. “I still think men are fascinated by what women get up to when men aren’t there,” Williams says. “They’re playing on that mystery of what the men that are still ruling the universe largely are very scared of: the wisdom of women — and the fact that women weirdly seem to be able to tell when they’re lying!”
Setting up a school for girls who can discern truth from lies seems pretty innocuous, if not beneficial for the greater good of the Imperium. Rather than make it a skill to fear, the Sisters have finessed it into a coveted asset to the Great Houses. By hiring out Truthsayers to leaders, they infiltrate the halls of power in a very public role where they advise people.
As part of their mystique, the Truthsayers take on a quasi-religious image by mostly staying silent and wearing armor-like black veils, space nun headpieces, and chaste formless dresses, in order to play into the archetypes that men in power expect from weird, witchy women. They’re imposing enough to be taken seriously, but devoutly feminine enough to be seen as harmless. “[It’s] excellent branding on their part in terms of the veil and just the remove at which they hold themselves,” showrunner and executive producer Alison Schapker says. “They’re kind of walking embodiments of mystery.”
By leaning into these aesthetics, the Sisters not only coax leaders into letting them dutifully advise their every move, but also hide in plain sight as they pull the strings of the universe. “They present themselves as a mystical order, but deep down they’re using espionage, they’re using sabotage, they’re using political influence, they’re using a variety of skills that control power,” Goldberg continues. “And one part of it, which I think is really essential, is controlling a narrative. If you control the narrative, I think you can control the future.”
Most importantly, the Sisterhood has convinced the ruling class that they are not a threat to its position, thereby allowing them to have the ultimate power in the Imperium. “The Sisterhood allows the men to think that they’re in charge, because that’s convenient,” says Watson.
Powerful women are nothing new to blockbuster sci-fi or fantasy. But often it’s reserved to a handful of female characters who try to exercise influence within otherwise patriarchal societies, such as Alicent and Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon, Rey in the new Star Wars movies, or Furiosa in the Mad Max franchise. Dune: Prophecy flips that narrative on its head with a bold display of feminine centralization that depicts women with the nuances of power that are typically awarded to men in sci-fi (and beyond).
“It’s the fact that this is a sci-fi, huge world, but we’re honing in on the women, and the women are powerful and they literally run things,” Jade Anouka, who portrays talented acolyte Sister Theodosia, says. “Not only is it women at the top of their game, but it’s women helping younger women to step up.” In the series, certain promising disciples like Sister Theodoia and Sister Lila (Chloe Lea) are called upon to take on bigger responsibilities as the Sisterhood seeks to fend off threats and cement its position. And even within the Sisterhood, there are diverse relationships, opposing views, and power struggles among not just those in charge, but also the students, some of whom directly question the motivations of their organization and matriarchs. “It’s rare to see a show on such a big scale that goes through these relationships that women have to each other that don’t really have anything to do with men, specifically, which I think is really cool,” Chloe Lea says.
Beyond the Sisterhood, every leading woman of Dune: Prophecy is also a major power player. Princess Ynez Corrino (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina), the daughter of Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong) who is set to join the Sisterhood to become a stronger heir, cares deeply for those she’s close to, including her party boy brother, Constantine Corrino (Josh Heuston), and strapping royal swordmaster, Keiran Atreides (Chris Mason), but at the same time is strongly governed by personal desires. She’s aware that she is both a pawn in political alliances and a player who can gain from any given situation. “She’s trying to get what she wants out of things, as well,” Sarah-Sofie Boussnina tells Refinery29. “She’s playing her cards.”
And then there’s Empress Natalya Corrino (Jodhi May), who is somewhat sidelined from her husband’s ear in the presence of a royal Truthsayer and has to find agency on her own terms. “She’s someone who trusts her instinct, and she’s incredibly wary of this overreliance on the Sisterhood,” Jodhi May says. “It’s a really interesting investigation of how women behave in positions of power with each other.” Given her position, Natalya has to be incredibly careful about how she navigates within the world of the Imperium. “It’s really a case of subtle manipulation, I would say — more honey than vinegar,” May adds. “Empress Natalia is really struggling with being a very smart woman and a real instinctive leader in a somewhat subordinated position. She’s struggling with how to exercise that power in a way that doesn’t set the cat amongst the pigeons yet, but as you keep watching, you’ll discover how that changes.”
Dune: Prophecy doesn’t pull any punches for the sake of aspirational “girl power.” No one is a straightforward hero or villain. Almost everyone has an unconventional edge of moral ambiguity and self-serving motivations, and it’s refreshing to see women (and lots of them) treated with complex depth and given unique displays of power that are essential to the plot. From the movies, we know that the Sisterhood eventually succeed in their millenia-long plans. How they get to that total domination of the universe, however, has yet to be explored. And where the movies and books may have whispered the commanding power of its women, Dune: Prophecy shouts it.
Dune: Prophecy premieres November 17 on Max.

FASHIONBook-to-screen adaptations are a risky endeavor, leaving fans holding their breath in anticipation. Will the magic translate? Cross, the new Amazon Prime Video thriller, proves that it can! Starring Aldis Hodge, the show delivers a gripping and faithful adaptation of James Patterson’s novel. From the opening moments, it’s clear that this series is a winner, promising an exciting and action-packed future.
Following in the footsteps of his predecessors Morgan Freeman (Kiss The Girls and Along Came A Spider) and Tyler Perry (Alex Cross), Hodge takes on the role of Alex Cross in this gripping eight-episode series. As a homicide detective and forensic psychologist, he delves into the darkest corners of the criminal underworld, determined to seek justice for victims by any means necessary.
As a grieving widower and dedicated father of two, Alex Cross faces the ultimate challenge: hunting a serial killer while grieving his own personal loss. Each episode is exhilarating, delivering shocking twists and turns, leaving you ready for more. Unlike previous adaptations, this layered series dives into the character’s emotional journey, exploring themes of grief, mental health, and complex relationships.
Before its premiere on Thursday, November 14, Cross was renewed for a second season back in April. The early renewal is a major milestone in a television landscape where shows, especially those featuring predominantly Black casts, are often prematurely canceled. This bold move by Hollywood executives demonstrates their belief in the show’s ability to captivate audiences and break new ground.
Die-hard fans of the book series instantly embraced the latest TV adaptation after the trailer dropped in September 2024. The cast was stunned by the overwhelming response, with the trailer garnering over 14 million YouTube views in its first week.
Black women have been instrumental in Aldis Hodge’s career and are ready to support his latest project. Hodge has consistently delivered powerful performances, from Black Mirror to Black Adam, Straight Outta Compton, What Men Want, and many more. When we caught up with the dynamic actor at the Cross premiere, he expressed his gratitude for the unwavering support of Black women throughout his career.
“Black women protect Black men in every facet,” Hodge told Refinery29 Unbothered. “I was raised by my momma, I got a sister and have a daughter now. Our community is held down by Black women. For me, it really does mean a lot. It’s special because I want to represent myself well and how we perceive Black women in a positive light.”
He continued, “I understand the struggles because I’ve seen my momma struggle. I understand how hard it is sometimes to get the respect you deserve as soon as you walk into the room. How hard it is to be acknowledged for your greatness and brilliance. So, I hope that with whatever I do, I’m paying homage and paying that forward with highlighting, celebrating, and acknowledging Black women because I am nothing at all without the Black women in my life.”
These sentiments are reflected in the character of Alex Cross. What begins as a seemingly ordinary day quickly takes a deadly turn, transforming into a crime scene when a sudden burst of gunfire shatters the peaceful afternoon between Cross and his wife, Maria, as her life is tragically cut short. As Cross and his partner, Detective John Sampson, jump into action, a chilling realization dawns upon him: this is no ordinary crime. The loss of Maria leaves Cross devastated and determined to bring her killer to justice.
A year after the tragic loss of his wife, Cross seeks comfort in a leave of absence. But his plans are interrupted when a high-profile Black Lives Matter activist, Emir Goodspeed (Donovan Brown), is found murdered, and he’s pulled back into the case. As the investigation deepens, a horrifying pattern emerges, revealing a twisted serial killer at work.
One harsh reality the show accurately depicts is racial injustice and police brutality, echoing the sentiments of the heightened Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. As a Black detective, Cross is caught in a moral dilemma, torn between his duty to the law and the needs of his community. A show like this could easily rely on one-dimensional copaganda. But showrunner Ben Watkins told us they had to tackle the proverbial elephant in the room of police brutality and the courage it takes to tackle such a sensitive topic. Plus, he delved into how Hodge’s compelling delivery brings this issue to the forefront.
“In today’s day and age, if you’re going to do a show with a detective who is a cop and don’t include that conversation in the show, you’re not being an honest storyteller,” Watkins said. “When there’s a cop in the Black community, there can be tension. So, it was a great opportunity to bring that conversation forward in a way that reflected all the nuances of that conversation.”
He continued, “Generally, somebody’s preaching or they’re really polarizing. But there are so many different viewpoints related to that. And I really wanted to be part of making that conversation progress.”
As the series evolves, continually haunted by Maria’s sudden death, Cross struggles with unresolved grief and the pressure of the investigation. His mental health deteriorates as he grapples with the hole in his heart of losing his wife and a new threat to his family. These personal challenges push him to the brink, straining his relationships with loved ones and colleagues and leaving him feeling isolated and desperate.
The exploration of the characters’ depth separates this series from other thrillers. His personal struggles add a layer of humanity, which allows audiences to empathize with him. Although the show refrained from expanding on his wife’s cold case, viewers are still able to witness how her death deeply impacts Cross.
His refusal to seek help jeopardizes his relationship with Sampson, who isn’t afraid to confront his friend’s self-destructive behavior. Staying true to the saying, “Hold your friends accountable,” this authentic portrayal of male friendship, particularly between Black men, is a refreshing aspect of the show. Mustafa credits the time spent shadowing detectives with Hodge as instrumental in developing their on-screen chemistry.
“Once we had that experience, we knew what it was like to be a detective and how people take the job home with them and are unable to shed it,” he said. “A lot of that is what’s going on in the first season. After we got through that, it was almost like we went through something together, and we were able to portray that on the screen. That’s the biggest thing that created that bond between us.”
Another highlight from the series was the chemistry between Hodges’ and Samantha Walkes (Elle Monteiro) characters which made their on-screen romance captivating and undeniable. Despite their relationship challenges, audiences can’t help but root for them. Like any relationship, theirs isn’t perfect. Cross is still dealing with his emotions, but Monterio’s unwavering support and love demonstrate Black love in its purest form.
“I believe in real love rather than true love,” Walkes stated. “Real love means complexity. It means hardship and loving the full person even through brokenness, loss, and grief and the ways in which we fracture from the world and life. We’re not supposed to have it all together.”
The actress added, “There should be one place on this earth where you can lay it all down, remove the mask, de-robe, and be with your person. I believe that’s real love, and I love that we showcase that.”
And we couldn’t agree more because real love is always a beautiful thing! It’s also much-needed in this chilling psychological thriller that digs deep into the darkest corners of the human psyche while keeping audiences on the edge of their seats. However, this series is not to be mistaken as just another detective show. Underneath the murder mystery and unsolved cases is the exploration of grief, police brutality, and toxic masculinity, which is both timely and thought-provoking. There’s no doubt that Watkins has a hit show on his hands, and with Hodge as the leading man, his stellar performance may make him a frontrunner for an Emmy.
